What Is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program in the United States primarily designed for individuals aged 65 and older, although it also covers younger individuals with certain disabilities and medical conditions. The program consists of different parts:

  • Part A covers hospital insurance, which includes inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

  • Part B provides medical insurance for outpatient care, including doctor visits, preventive services, and other medically necessary services.

  • Medigap or Medicare Supplement: Cover the expenses Medicare Part A and B do not cover.

  • Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, combines elements of both Part A and Part B and is offered by private insurance companies. It may include additional benefits such as prescription, dental and vision coverage.

  • Part D provides prescription drug coverage, which helps beneficiaries pay for the medications they need.

Medicare is essential for millions of Americans, offering them access to necessary health care services. To enroll in Medicare, individuals generally need to apply during specific enrollment periods, particularly when they turn 65 or when they qualify due to a disability.
