Medicare Part D Caps Out-of-Pocket Drug Costs at $2,000 in 2025
In 2025, Medicare will undergo significant changes impacting coverage and costs for beneficiaries. Out-of-pocket costs for Part D drug prescriptions will be capped at $2,000, eliminating the "donut hole" coverage gap. However, premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance for traditional Medicare Parts A and B will increase.
Medicare Advantage plans, despite maintaining low premiums, may cut back on benefits like over-the-counter medications and transportation services. New services including behavioral health care, cardio assessments, and certain dental procedures linked to chronic conditions will be covered. An optional payment plan for prescription drug costs allows spreading payments over the coverage year. Notifications for unused benefits within Medicare Advantage plans will be implemented.
The coverage of biosimilar drugs will be expedited, and prior authorization practices analyzed for fairness. Future plans include potential price reductions for additional medications by 2027 and possible coverage for anti-obesity drugs by 2026. These revisions aim to lower healthcare expenses and expand service coverage for Medicare beneficiaries.
